Purpose - why this role is important _\- Independant Contractor_ An opportunity exists for an AHPRA registered Medical Practitioner, to partner with the AFL and provide medical services for the AFL State League Umpiring program. Key Responsibilities
- Act as a medical doctor for AFL State League Umpires;
- Be available to attend Victorian AFL State League umpire training during the AFL State League season as determined by the AFL, to provide medical services to Umpires, - Noting at this point in time, training is currently on a Tuesday evening;
- Assist Umpires with medical referrals for further or alternative care if required;
- Maintain effective communication between all relevant stakeholders in the AFL Umpire Team, including the AFL State League Umpire High Performance, Coaching, Administration and Healthcare teams on Umpire Injury/Illness status and availability;
- Be available to see Umpires privately on an ad hoc basis as in clinical rooms and conduct Telehealth consultations as required
- Have scope for additional work to support other umpiring groups at the AFL upon request from the AFL State League Umpires department.
Must haves - what’s needed to help you be successful
- Be an AHPRA registered Medical Practitioner (essential)
- Practice under a valid ABN (essential)
- Based in Melbourne, Victoria (essential)
- Hold a current working with children check (essential)
- Have experience working in sports medicine (desired)
- Have experience working in Australian Rules Football (desired)
- Have familiarity with AFL (desired)
- Have working knowledge of Smartabase AMS (desired)
- Have strong communication skills and willingness to discuss complex relevant issues with peers
- Have strong IT skills (including confidence working with electronic medical records systems, Microsoft 365 programs)
- Comply with AFL policies and procedures, including integrity, anti-doping and medical confidentiality requirements
The term of this appointment will be from January 2026 to 30 October 2026.
